Over 100 Rice Mills Address Power Tariff Disparities
In March 2024, more than 100 rice mill owners in West Bengal approached the state electricity ombudsman to address disparities in power tariffs across the state. They highlighted that mills in certain areas receive electricity at significantly reduced rates, leading to unfair competition.

Malda District Warns Against 'Dholta' Practice in Rice Procurement
In December 2024, the Malda district administration issued a stern warning against the practice of demanding "dholta" (a form of discount) during rice procurement. Authorities stated that any mill or official found engaging in this practice would face severe disciplinary action, including license cancellation.

West Bengal Government Increases Milling Charges
In November 2024, the West Bengal government increased the milling charges for converting paddy into rice. The state raised its contribution from ₹10 to ₹20 per quintal, addressing the demands of the Bengal Rice Mills Association. Additionally, mandi labour charges were increased by ₹2 per quintal.

Reopening of 600 Closed Rice Mills
In September 2024, it was reported that approximately 600 rice mills in West Bengal, which had been closed for over a year due to reduced demand following an export ban, were set to reopen. This development was expected to provide employment to over 200,000 individuals and offer farmers better prices for their produce.
